Some pregnant women may well find that they’re affected bypre-eclampsia, typically appearing in the second half of pregnancy or soon after their baby has been delivered. Early signs of it include high blood pressure and protein in your urine, as well as swollen feet, ankles, face, and hands, severe headaches, vision problems, and pain just below the ribs.
Veg and Fish Diet
But now new research has found that following a diet rich in fish and vegetables could help reduce the risk of developing pre-eclampsia while following a more western diet (one high in meat, white bread, potatoes, and margarine) increases the odds of developing this condition during pregnancy.
The Imperial College London/University of Bristol study found that eating fish and vegetables dropped the odds of gestational hypertension by 14 percent and pre-eclampsia by 21 percent. But a Western diet increased the odds by 18 percent and 40 percent respectively.
“Current advice recommends eating at least five portions of different fruit and vegetables every day, instead of foods high in fat. And generally, it is safe to consume fish during pregnancy – no more than two portions of oily fish, such as mackerel or salmon, a week, and no more than two fresh tuna steaks or four medium-sized cans of tuna a week. Women should avoid eating shark, swordfish or marlin,” Emmanuella Ikem, author of the study, commented.
If you do notice any pre-eclampsia symptoms, seek medical advice immediately. Many cases are mild but if they go unmonitored and untreated the condition can result in complications for both mother and baby.
